Frequently Asked Questions

What is a neuropsychological assessment?

A neuropsychological assessment is a structured way of understanding how a person’s thinking skills and day-to-day functioning fit together. It uses clinical interview, standardised tests, and questionnaires to assess areas such as attention, memory, learning, language, and executive functioning.

Depending on the referral questions, a neuropsychological assessment can contribute to diagnostic decision-making (for example ADHD or learning disorders) and can also identify strengths and support needs to guide practical recommendations.

What happens during a neuropsychological assessment?

Neuropsychological assessments typically involve:

  • an intake appointment (history and current concerns)

  • a face-to-face assessment session (testing and questionnaires)

  • scoring, interpretation, and integration of information

  • a feedback appointment

  • a written report with practical recommendations

In most cases, feedback and the written report are provided within three weeks of the assessment session, allowing time for careful scoring, interpretation, and report preparation.

What happens during an autism assessment?

For children and adolescents, an autism assessment typically includes a developmental history interview, behavioural observations, and standardised assessment tools selected for age and presentation (for example ADOS-2 or MIGDAS-2). Questionnaires may also be used to gather information across settings, such as from parents or caregivers and, where appropriate, teachers or partners.

A written report and feedback appointment are provided within three weeks of the assessment session. Where relevant, the report may support discussions with schools and treating teams, and may assist with some applications, noting that requirements vary across programs.

How much does an assessment cost?

Fees vary depending on the type of assessment and the amount of testing required.

At our clinic:

  • A standard therapy session (50 minutes) is $320

  • Assessments start at $2,650

Assessment fees reflect the time involved beyond the face-to-face appointment, including scoring and interpretation of standardised measures, integration of information, file review, report writing, and the feedback session. We will confirm the total fee and what is included before you proceed.

Medicare rebates are generally available for eligible therapy sessions with a referral under a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Rebates for assessment are more limited, but specific pathways may apply for some under-25 neurodevelopmental assessments depending on referral type and eligibility. Private health fund rebates vary by provider and policy.

Do I need a referral?

Therapy: A referral from a GP (Mental Health Treatment Plan) is required to access Medicare rebates. You can still attend without a referral, but rebates will not apply.

ADHD and Learning Assessment (Neuropsychology): A referral is not required, but a referral letter and any previous reports can be helpful.

Autism Diagnostic Assessment: A referral is not required. Some Medicare pathways for under-25 neurodevelopmental assessments have specific referral requirements. We can advise what applies based on age and circumstances.
